The plugin doesn’t just break your site. The plugin works just fine it sounds more like you misconfigured the problem. Common things to avoid is..
Don’t enable database and object caching on shared hosting.
Don’t minify all CSS and JS manually without testing. – This can break sites if not tested correctly.
Don’t enable debugging unless needed.
If you are using PHP 7 there is a fix on this support forum to help. I have hostgator for a couple sites and it works well with the plugin. (i run it on PHP 7)
And don’t enable minify auto, every site is different so an auto option is never a good choice. If you don’t know what you are doing, use a more basic minify/cache plugin.
