not sure what you mean by small posts? where’s the different? is it the homepage featured category?, its normal to have first medium size featured image follow with thumbnail. please elaborate more.

check the setting in wp-admin->theme option->homepage featured category->featured layout style.
you must be using ‘medium’ not default.

its the home setting->choose your featured category layout->all medium, choose default instead.
seem like you still using v1.6.3 of the style.css, better update it or add this to theme option->custom css
