I’m just trying it. The grid shows but no images show if you just tag the posts ‘featured’. Making posts sticky (with or without the ‘featured’ tag) shows a grid but no images.
The only thing that works (shows the grid and the images in them) is go on the post edit page to Featured Image -> Set featured Image (some image that is 1038px wide, doesn’t have to be in the post)
AND tag the post ‘featured’.
You can use a different tag name, that’s what you can set with Appearance->Customize->Featured Content
I have read in other places that there is a conflict between Jetpack and Twentyfourteen. I have been experiencing the same conditions. I disabled Jetpack and then reenabled it. My slider returns but the condition will occur again soon.
I just disabled Jetpack and I got the grid to work.
I have other tags in my posts, but did just add ‘featured’ and did not need ‘sticky’ also. I also do have featured images set.
There seems to be a forthcoming fix or if you want to mess with development versions there is a fix.

How do you set an article as sticky? I don’t see that anywhere.

I disabled and updated jetpack and now my “featured” text window shows up and the grid appears on the site.

Sorry I’ve been away.
I fixed the problem, by going to Settings>Reading>Featured Content.
That’s where I was able to change the tag name to ‘Featured’, it was blank by default (which was causing the problem).
I am not able to do it through Appearance>Customize>Featured Content. It just doesn’t show up there for me, the only option I have is Layout (Grid or Slider).
FYI, haven’t had to disable Jetpack.

I also fixed the problem by going to Settings>Reading>Featured Content … but in my case the problem was I had to change “featured” (with a small f) to “Featured” (with a capital F).
Hi, I was experiencing the same issues, with the Featured Posts Grid/Slider not showing.
I disabled the jetpack plugin
and then re-enabled it
and now the Featured Posts Grid/Slider is showing again.
