.. i downloaded and installed it and from what I can tell, Im unable to make a slide with text on top of an image.. at full-width auto-height..? All I see is a predefined template with text beside an image, which on mobile is terrible

Thank you for choosing Master Slider.
There is an option named auto height. It set the slide size according to the size of background image. You cannot change the size based on the text. The texts will be resized based on the slide.
