• I have created an account on Google webmaster and have tried to conduct the site verification using three (3) of their methods.
I looked at their instructions on https://www.google.com/webmasters/verification/
I first tried their “recommended” method, HTML file upload. This did not work. [I use FileZilla for FTP]
Next, I tried two (2) of their “alternative” methods. These included 1) HTML tag “Add a meta tag to your site’s home page” and
    2) Domain name provider “Sign in to your domain name provider”.

Neither of these methods were successful. Can any one suggest what I may be doing wrong? Is another method that I can try?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • This has worked for me as I had a few Deny records in your .htaccess file

    1. In cPanel, I went to my File Manager, found the .htaccess file and renamed it to .htaccess.bac2

    2. Then I tried the verification again and it worked fine

    3. It may have interfered with how my site works, but it has allowed the verification through, then I changed it back to .htaccess again.

I was supported by Hostgator to fix this.
