• I use Firefox and Chrome browsers. Two days ago a visitor to my blog emailed me and said she had not been able to access my blog (http://onemom.com) in weeks using her browser (IE8 and Windows XP, so she can’t upgrade to IE9). The site works fine in all browsers EXCEPT IE. I have changed themes, I have deactivated all plugins and tried having each one active by itself, but in each scenario, I get the same message from IE (and yes, I’ve cleared the cache, etc etc …. regular visitors are not going to try this many options just to read my blog). This is the error message she received (and so did I when I tried it in IE8):

We were unable to return you to onemom.com.

Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem.
    What you can do:
    Go to your home page

    Try to return to onemom.com

    Try your theme’s forums http://themehybrid.com/support/

I have tried several different themes this morning and all bring the same error message in IE. It should not take this much work just to get a simple blog site to be visible in IE. I don’t do code or CSS or whatever. Just looking for an answer to why my site won’t work in IE. If anyone knows of a particular theme that does not trigger an error in IE, perhaps that would be faster then sending me to other forums. As I said, I have tried several different themes, shut down all plugins, etc, etc, and still getting the same error.

Sounds like a problem with your version of IE – what version are you using and what themes won’t work. Please also post a link to your site.

Oh sorry, I see it’s IE8 – which may or may not be supported by current themes…but a link to your site is the place to start.

the link to my site is in my first post. http://onemom.com

The problem isn’t for me, because I don’t use IE, but for my readers that use WinXP and can’t upgrade to IE9.

Okay, so here’s the problem – IE is very outdated now and even when it was current, it had many problems that other browsers did not have. So web developers had to do all kinds of things to make it work okay. But many developers are no longer supporting IE8 so those “fixes” aren’t necessarily included in many themes.

So probably your best approach is going to be to find a theme that still has those fixes — can you try switching to twentyeleven and see how it looks in that theme?

I switched to 2011, and that didn’t help either. I dislike IE as much as anybody, but unfortunately there are those with WinXP who will not try anything other than the browser that Microsoft gave them.

Yes, that is an unfortunate reality. So I don’t have IE (any version but surely not 8) – but using Adobe Browser lab (simulated version of various browsers) – your site does refuse to load (says there is a page error). Validating your site does show a bunch of errors:

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fonemom.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

So I’d suggest starting with fixing those. See this for more info:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Validating_a_Website

You could also try deactivating all plugins to see if any are causing the problem.

    Thread Starter OneMom

    (@onemom)

    all plugins are deactivated.

I’ll say this as simply as possible: I have no clue about all those validation errors; I don’t “do” code; I don’t understand why the site is fine in all browsers except any version of IE prior to IE9.

    So, what are my options?

Doing some reading to learn about how to fix the errors – start with the page I linked to. (There’s no guarantee fixing those will make your site work in IE8 – just to be clear on that.) Or you could hire someone to help you: http://jobs.wordpress.net/

Or you could advise your users to use another browser :). Not ideal I know, but it’s really beyond these forums to do extensive troubleshooting for such an outdated browser. (Even Google and MS are dropping support of it soon…) Someone may come along who knows more than I do about this, and who wants to chime in, but I would not count on it.

OK. thanks. Again, I have no idea about the validation errors nor do I have time to read about fixing it. My blog has been up and running since 2007 without major issues. The big problem appears to be in Microsoft’s court. Why anyone insists on using IE is beyond me. I use wordpress because it is suppose to be simple and mostly trouble-free for people who do not write code. If my site didn’t work on any browser, well then I would be more concerned, but the fact that it is only IE is very irritating.

I’ve been testing my themes using IE on XP and they all work (including TwentyTwelve) .. the only things missing are css3 features, but nothing important that affects the layout or function of the site.

I’ve just tested your site on IE8 under XP and your site works normally with the home page template – but upon clicking a page with a fancy background/header it crashes the tab – looks like something in the header is causing a fatal error – maybe the header image. This is using your theme, but you say this happens in TwentyTwelve?

I’ve been testing my themes and 2012 using IE8 and they all work fine, TwentyTwelve works perfectly in my IE8 on XP… Hope this helps…
