    Hello!

I tried making a backup with Backup Guard before I would do a WP upgrade. Halfway the backup I got an error and I lost all contact with the website.
As for now I reuploaded the WP files by FTP as prescribed by the codex (manual upgrade). I got the wp-admin page working again and I’m glad to see al my posts/pages/plugins still exist. The big problem now is: the site is still down. Everytime I want to visit it, I get redirected to the 404 page of the hosting company.
Do you have any idea on how to resolve this?

    Kind regards,
    Reinhout

edit: when going to http://built-it.xyz, the language plugin still redirects towards the right language (http://built-it.xyz/nl/start) so the site must be running behind the 404. If only I knew where the error comes from.

  • Try:
    – switching to the default theme automatically by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and the wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

    Hi Esmi!

Thank you for the suggestion. I found that it’s the Polylang plugin that causes the 404 errors. I’ve never had any problems with that plugin in the past.

    edit:
The solution for anyone with a plugin that fiddles around with the links (polylang and others). You need to go to settings –> permalinks and change it to the standard option. After that you may reactivate the plugin and change the permalink settings back.

Glad to hear that you managed to sort this out. And thanks for posting a solution. This may well help many other Polylang users. 🙂
