Single apostrophe causes an extra space

    Hi,
    Since yesterday, when I use a single straight apostrophe in a word, an extra space appears after it when I publish it in my custom HTML block.

    The example is if I type the word … it’s … the word appears like this … it’ s …

    It only started happening a day or two ago, nothing has changed on my workstation. The even weirder thing is when I go into my custom HTML block and ‘edit code’, the preview pane on the right shows the word correctly without the extra gap. It’s only when the code has been saved and published as live page that the extra gap appears.

    What has changed in your WordPress installation? Have you installed any updates, and if so, which ones?

    Which theme are you using? What does the output look like on the front end, and in the source code as well?

    No updates, no changes. Front end has the big space after the apostrophe, not in the WordPress editor previewer or any other html previewer I use.

    I found a forum poster (not WP) saying that they had the same issue which was being caused by a particular font. I tried changing the font and sure enough, the issue went away. That still doesn’t explain why the problem didn’t exist with that particular font 2 days ago.

    I tried it on my live site as well, same thing.

    OK, it must be the font file on my PC, when I check the webpage on my mobile, it’s fine. I would usually think of trying that. Doh!

    Even so, when I view my html file in my Notepad++ html viewer, or I open the file in any browser, it never shows the extra space after the apostrophe. I checked the font in all cases and it is still the same one. It only happens in a published WP webpage. Yet another WP idiosyncrasy?

    … or just another desktop browser update that you didn’t see, but happened automatically because “it’s important to you” 🙂
