This should work in the free version, the Pro add-on isn’t required to make the user get the level he just paid for.
It’s strange that the user isn’t getting it… Is he registering right after checkout, with the same browser? Does the browser accept cookies? Is he using the signup link s2Member sent him?
Isn’t there something wrong mentioned in the log entries for the transaction? WP Admin -> s2Member -> Log Files
Do the log entries mention that the cookies have been set and the signup confirmation email sent?

You can do live 1 cent purchases for your test transactions.
After upgrading to version 140614 the problem appears to have gone away. (another admin toggled some settings then rolled back the changes, so I can’t say 100%)
I was in Haiti for a week. I will try to upgrade the S2. But will it mess up all the user info and tracking?

@leeweiland Make sure you have this enabled: WP Admin -> s2Member -> General -> Deactivation Safeguards
And it’s always good practice, in general, to make a backup to restore your site from if you break something.
