Sidebar widget error after upgrade to 2.3

    I can’t reactivate sidebar widgets after upgrade – this is the error message

    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare register_sidebars() (previously declared in /home/content/t/o/m/tomcunliffesc/html/wordpress/wp-includes/widgets.php:15) in /home/content/t/o/m/tomcunliffesc/html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/widgets/widgets.php on line 22
