Sidebar height not matching content height

Hi,

Two things I can’t figure out in the Twenty Eleven theme.

1- How to make the content column and the sidebar column the same height. My sidebar is ending at different heights with priority given to the length of content area. I’ve tried the faux column trick (http://line25.com/articles/create-sidebars-of-equal-height-with-faux-columns) to no avail and I know I’m just missing something simple to fix this.

2- Below the primary (#access) menu and above the page/content area is a small gap in which the background is showing. I’ve tried everything to remove it but nothing works. In the simplest terms, I want the white and the brown to meet.

And yes, I’ve already created and am working in a child theme.
