I’ve just started using Sidebar Widgets ( http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/WordPress_Widgets ). I had to update my theme, but it was well worth it, and not terribly difficult.

That page lists several widgets to get started with.

Perhaps my favorite is a very simple one, ExecPHP (available on the Widget page, or at http://www.ottodestruct.com ). It’s just like the basic Text Widget, only it lets you execute PHP code within it. This is great for converting your own custom sidebar junk into a widget, instantly.

You can see ExecPHP in action on my blog, http://www.r-blog.com/blog/ . It holds the fading image slideshow, which is powered by Flashfader ( http://www.lynk.de/wordpress/flashfader/ ).
