Shorter Titles Feature for Widget Doesn't Work

We’re trying to set up shorter titles within the widget, but I notice that the shorter title only shows in the widget for the post you’re currently viewing. The other titles in the series are the full/default title. If I jump over to another post in the series, THAT post’s title in the widget will be the custom/short title, and again all others will be the full/default title. Is this expected behavior? I’d like to display the short titles for all posts in the series, if specified on the post.
