Severe problems with WP 3.5.2 using plugin version 1.8.9

    After updating my WP installation to version 3.5.2 I experienced extremely high CPU spikes which slowed my site to a crawl or just threw 500 server errors.

    After spending all day meticulously deselecting plugins and other code I found the culprit was the “WP Maintenance Mode” plugin (version 1.8.9). After deactivating it, all these problems vanished.
