Setting The Events Owner's email

Using wordpress 3.8.1 and events manager 5.5.2
My website has different users that submit events. I’m debugging some code that will work with Events Manager and the issue is accessing the event_owner’s email.
How do i control what the “event owner’s email is ? Is this entered explicitly ? I thought this was set automatically to be the SAME email as the role of the person who created/authored the event.
When i turn wordpress’s debug feature on, for an event i created, i find that the event owner email is not set; the object storing the event has data, but the event_owner’s email is blank.
What is set however, is the user_email . Any ideas on how to ensure that there is data stored in event_owner’s email ? Do i have to explicitly require this email from my users (using a custom version of the booking form ) ?
Hopefully someone can let me know what I am missing.
