Hi, I’m using woocommerce to allow customers to buy lessons on a weekly basis.

Each week I create a new product for customers to purchase – this is so I can track who has booked what on a weekly basis. Anyway, I know that creating a new URL every week it isn’t good for SEO, so what I want to do is use the same slug for the lesson product each week. I’ve tried this but when I try and save the slug it appends a ‘2’ character on the end so it’s unique. I don’t want this.

I’ve tried going back to the old lesson product and changing the slug to something different, hoping it would allow me to then use the original slug for the new lesson product. No dice. Any help would be appreciated?

    Thanks.

Creating a new product each time will definitely make SEO harder. You could look into redirecting the old URL to the new URL through a 301 redirect, but it’s more manual work.

Why not create a new variation for each week? You could keep the same product, the same URL, then disable the old variations so they can’t be selected.

Hi Hannah, yes I’d rather not set up a 301 every time.

I want the order to show the date on, which I suppose it would do if I just edited the date each week on the same product.

Is this what you mean when you say create a variation?

So I’d create a new variation for each week, i.e. Week 18, Week 19, etc. Does that make sense?

This is what I already do. The problem is that the system changes the slug each time I do this?

I set up a variable product, with a custom attribute called “week” and added a few weeks to it. It shows up as a dropdown and the product URL looks good:

    Variable product

I then went and added another week to the dropdown by creating another variation, so now week 21 is also included and the URL is still the same:

    Another variation

I hope that helps you in the right direction!

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved – if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.
