• Hi,

If I create HTML5 pages in another program (and upload them and related assets to the same website server), and then create pages inside WordPress that redirect to those externally created pages, do I lose in terms of SEO?

Basically, I’m trying to avoid creating pages in WordPress — because in WP, I don’t have anywhere near the control and precision I have when using the other program.

And I do want to use WordPress because of the SEO and content/posts management benefits.

I know 301 redirects work great for redirecting old site pages to new ones, but does the same strategy work for a brand-new page being redirected to an externally created HTML page that’s on the same server (and has the same domain name)?

And, of course, if there is a specific way this can be solved, I would like to know the method and steps.

I hope I’ve been able to explain my situation.

Thank you for your time and help.

  • There will be no SEO penalty. Google (etc) care about the content of your pages, their links to and from, their technology is indifferent to the technology used to create the pages they see.
It is easy to create the links from your WordPress site to your special pages using menu links of type “Links”, just enter your whole link address to your uploaded html page.
Make sure that you also have exit links from your custom pages back to your regular pages, certainly for HOME, probably others too.

Also suggest that you join Google webmasters, this will show you how Google experience your site, also probably a good idea to create and submit a sitemap.
    Details here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/
Suggest that you use the google<number>.html technique to assert ownership, by far the simplest.

Thank you for the answer, RossMitchell. I feel good already.

Where can I find some details on menu links? And/or, what search term would give me the best resources to implement your suggestion?

    Thanks.

Where can I find some details on menu links?

Login to your WordPress administration, go to:
    Appearance > Menus
You select which menu location you are working on and assign a menu to that location, (this is standard stuff).
The types of entries you can add to menus are on the left hand side, they are:
    – Pages
    – Links
    – Categories
Your targets of interest are the Links, you can link to any URL anywhere ! What is a little unusual for you is that the link will be to an HTML page on your own site, unusual but the menu mechanism will neither know nor care, perfectly legitimate. Fill in the fields, add to menu and drag them around, remember to SAVE the modified menu.

Otherwise just go to the google webmasters link, and read the procedures, if you have an issue then create a support thread.

What in particular do you need to know before you proceed ?

Thanks for everything, RossMitchell. I am going to implement the site, based on your inputs, over the coming weekend. If I stumble or hit a roadblock, I will post my issue here. Have a good one.
