• Hi, I’m relatively new to WP. I’ve just had a really bad experience and don’t know what to do next. I installed All In One WP Security & Firewall plugin yesterday, spent ages upgrading the security on my website and thought I’d done a great job. Today, I can’t access my log-in page. I called my hosting company. They said the plugin was the problem and deleted it. Now I am back to where I started with no security (although I can now login to my WP site again which is good!).

I’ve read this post https://wordpress.org/support/topic/which-security-plugin-should-i-use?replies=5 which suggests using BulletProof Security and Wordfence together. My hosting company says to get GeoTrust Quick SSL (annual subscription payable) but I don’t understand what this product does. I was also told that a plugin called Securi does the same job but if it does, why would I pay for a subscription service?

I don’t know whether to try any more free plugins or whether I need to buy a website security product and if so, which one. I am very confused! I know that I need to secure my website somehow. Please can someone help? Thank you.

That will give you an SSL certificate which you can implement to protect people from snooping your password as you log in over public wifi (and a few other things, but that’s pretty much the biggest reason for why you’d want it). Basically, it sounds like your hosting provider greatly misunderstood what you wanted, wanted to make more $ off of you, or both. Sucuri is not the same thing, it’s very different.

So, there are a lot of security plugins out there, and they’re all pretty good. They also all have their own support forums for when you get into trouble, like https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/all-in-one-wp-security-and-firewall

I have used each one you’ve mentioned, I have no major complaints about either.

I recommend reading through https://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress first.
