Running WordPress installation script returns 500 internal server error

    I am installing WordPress for the first time in a subdirectory on the root of my website. I have attempted to follow the detailed instructions in “installing WordPress”, however my hosts version of phpMyAdmin does not match the description of the instructions.

    My host created a my SQL database, my username, and my password. I can log into phpMyAdmin however there is no privileges tab, link, or screen. I’ve changed nothing.

    I have edited the wp-config.php file accordingly.

    I renamed the wordpress directory to my own blog name, and FTPed the entire structure into the root of my website using FileZilla.

    When I tried to run the WordPress installation script http://example.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php with my website’s domain name in place of “example” and my WordPress subdirectory name in place of “blog” using Internet Explorer 8, I receive the error message “500 – Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.”

    Please advise.

    Try renaming wp-config.php to wp-config.php.old and letting WordPress create the config file as part of the install process.

    It may be a server configuration issue. Try asking your hosts for assistance.

    I did post a question to the host, thank you.

    But something doesn’t seem right, the instructions asked me to “point a web browser to start the installation script”. By point I assume they mean typing that script into the address bar of the browser.

    Isn’t there some type of security wall to prevent anyone from pointing a browser to my site to run the install.php file? Could I be running into that security wall?

    It means that you navigate to http://example.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php in your web browser.

    Could I be running into that security wall?

    There’s no security wall. The script is only run once per site.

    The host replied that on their server, they have to manually create my user name, password, database, and assign permissions, the last of which they previously forgot to do. Now I was able to run the installation script, with errors… 🙁
