• Hello,

I’ve been trying to get my RSS feed of calendar events to work. Unfortunately I’m not having any success. My goal is to have the feed display on another web page (different wordpress installation on a different server in the same domain). The feed displays if I paste the URL into my browser (http://www.bourbonlibrary.org/events/feed/). However, when I paste the URL into my feed widget it will not work. I have tried multiple RSS widgets. The one I’d like to use is Category Specific RSS Menu.

With the Category Specific RSS Menu widget, I get the following error message: Unknown Feed. RSS Error: WP HTTP Error: A valid URL was not provided.

I have tried RSS feeds from other sites and they seem to work fine.

    Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Hi Mark,

Have you tried running your feed through a feed validator to see if it’s producing any errors? That could be the issue.

Thanks for the great suggestion. I just used the W3C validator service and am told that it is a valid feed, but:

This feed is valid, but interoperability with the widest range of feed readers could be improved by implementing the following recommendations.

    line 28, column 45: Implausible date: Wed, 15 Jul 2015 19:00:00 +0000 (53 occurrences)

So, it appears not to like the date that is generated by Event Manager. But the feed is technically valid.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Mark

just to narrow down the problem and help us debug the issue is it possible to try the following temporarily:

    – deactivating all other plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems

Ok. I’m guessing you mean on the wordpress installation that is attempting to pull the RSS feed and display it. The feed is coming from a different wordpress installation.

I have switched to the default theme and disabled all the plugins except for an RSS feed plugin. The plugin is “Fade in fade out xml rss feed”, which is listed as compatible with my version of WordPress.

When I view the post that has the shortcode embedded, the following message displays:

    Invalid or Broken rss link.

    Further ideas, please!!!

    Thanks,
    Mark

I would definitely test with the RSS plugin deactivated, since it’s RSS you’re having a problem with.

I guess I’m being dense, but I don’t know how to test with it deactivated. Since the site that has the RSS feed plugin is the site that is pulling the feed, I will only be able to see the web site itself, which is working fine. It is the feed that is not working with the site.

    Does this make sense?

Sorry, I don’t follow. You mentioned that you had “disabled all the plugins except for an RSS feed plugin”. I’m just suggesting you deactivate that plugin.

    Caimin_nwl,

Sorry. I was replying to Angelo’s post about deactivating all the other plugins. I mistook your response as his.

Now to the question. I suppose I really am dense, but I don’t understand how to test an RSS feed if the RSS feed plugin is disabled. The website itself runs fine with the RSS plugin activated or deactiveated. When activated, the website just won’t pull the feed from the remote server and display it.

just to confirm, is this the plugin that you are using ‘Category – RSS widget menu’ ?

    Thread Starter madler99

    (@madler99)

No, the plugin that I had hoped to use is located at https://wordpress.org/plugins/category-specific-rss-feed-menu/ and is called Category Specific RSS Feed Menu.

I’ve tried several others though, as well. The ones I have tried are listed as working with my current version of WordPress. I believe the one you listed is not compatible with WordPress 4.2.2.

It’s seems clear the problem lies with RSS plugin you’re using. Is it compatible with custom post types?

As far as I know it is compatible with custom post types.

I need to mention that I have tried to use every RSS feed plugin compatible with WordPress 4.2.2 and can get none of them to work. Therefore I don’t really think it is the Category Specific RSS Feed Menu plugin that is the problem.

I have only managed to get one RSS feed plugin to work. It is
showRSS Widget. It was last updated 5 years ago and is only listed as compatible up to: 3.0.5
