I’m having trouble with the RSS feed on my site LuchaQuest. I can access it fine through my computer, using both the tiny link in the footer and the button I’ve installed in my menu, but using another computer in my house I can’t access it at all.

Is it working for anyone else? What could be messing up my RSS feed?

EDIT: Hang on, I’ve been viewing it through Firefox which has a built in RSS reader, but the browser on the other computer doesn’t. Is that it? Is the RSS page a jumbled mess without an RSS reader installed, and if so how can I fix that?

Yes, an RSS feed is a stream of XML data meant to be interpreted by a feed reader, like http://rssowl.org/ or http://newsblur.com/ not a browser.

At the moment, Firefox is the only browser with a built-in feed reader, and there really is no difference between http://www.luchaquest.net/home/ and http://www.luchaquest.net/home/feed/ except that the feed looks worse in a browser. πŸ™‚

So, anyone looking for your feed won’t be viewing it in a browser anyway. If they’re looking for your feed, they’re already using a separate feed reader.

Your feed looks fine in IE, FF, Safari and Chrome.

Are you using a feed reader extension in Safari and Chrome? At http://www.luchaquest.net/home/feed/ in default Safari you’ll see a button asking you to download a feed reader, and in default Chrome you’ll just see a stream of XML data.

I haven’t checked IE recently, but at launch IE 11 also directed you to download a feed reader by default, so if that has changed that’s awesome. πŸ™‚

It is IE 11 and as far as I know IE always had a reader included.

With Chrome it is an extension, although I don’t remember adding it. I know for a long time Chrome did not have a reader.

FF has always had a reader AFAIK.

In my Safari if you go to a site and it has a feed, the RSS button shows in the site url. Click on that and the feed opens. If you go to http://www.sitename/feed it will just open the feed. I couldn’t find that as an extension – maybe a plugin.

Ah, you must be on an older Safari. This is what Safari 8 does now: https://cloudup.com/cgy9bnvE0kn

Good to know about IE, thanks!

I have 5.1.7 Never use it except to check sites.

Apple really wants you to go the the store!

Either that or they don’t want to maintain an RSS reader anymore. πŸ™‚

Yeah, looks like that’s it. The issue was compounded by the fact that I noticed this while I was adding a custom button for the RSS to the menu, and had part of the URL wrong. So I first was having issues because I was clicking a button to an incorrect URL, but was getting completely different responses from different computers and browsers.

    Anyway, problem solved. Ish.
