RewriteEngine not allowed here

    I tried changing the PermaLink structure. mod_rewrite is enabled under Apache on my server. However, after the .htaccess file was created, the next thing that occurred was that I got server errors. The error log says:

    …/vlb/wordpress/.htaccess: RewriteEngine not allowed here

    What do I need to know?
