Please fix the issue, delete all kinds of caches (server-size, website, wpDiscuz, browser) and check again.

Sorry for the long-delayed reply. After much work (and wasted time!), it turns out the issue was not what you said but a known conflict with the WP-SpamShield plugin. It had been installed on my site since 2016 and defeated multiple previous attempts to add WPDiscuz.
This really should have been flagged up much sooner. Perhaps now you can add a warning in your plugin descriptions and suggest this as the first thing for users with issues to check in future.
