Removing /page/ from the URL

I have seen there are many ways to remove /category/ or /tag/ from the Permalink but i have not found a way yet to remove /page/ from a paged URL structure for example

instead of using
http://www.mydomain.com/page/9/

i want to use
http://www.mydomain.com/9/

OR

instead of using
http://www.mydomain.com/mycategory/page/3/

i want to use
http://www.mydomain.com/mycategory/3/

I am a bit curious is it possible to do in wordpress using any method? .htaccess? or is there a plugin out to do this job?
