Removes the “M” from “CMS”

    Content Management System, CMS. That’s how we use WordPress for our customers: to enable them to publish content in a managed way. We’ve locked down as much as we can for people who only edit their web sites every few months, and in between forget how to do it, and need something really simple and easy to understand which gives them only a few options to remember.

    This new editor certainly powers up the C (Content) but at the expense of the M (Management). For our customers it will be completely overwhelming – we’ll just have to use the plugin to keep the old editor in place.

    This new editor should be an optional add-on for people who really want more control of their content.

    Hiya,

    I’d like to address your concern about management, because I think this is a less known, but very powerful aspect of Gutenberg for users.

    You may already be familiar with pate templates, Gutenberg introduces Templates as well (I’ll call them Content Templates, as that’s what they are in my mind). They allow you to pre-define blocks on a page, with placeholders, limiting new blocks and which blocks can be removed etc. This means you can give the users a boilerplate of “this is what the page will look like, here are the fields you can fill in, you just put in whatever you need in each block and you are good to go”.

    OK so that’s good Gutenberg offers similar templates management system to the current system. So provide it as a plugin and let people who want to try it out use it. Don’t force us to rewrite all our themes and page templates to use this new editor before we can upgrade WordPress. We try to keep our WordPress up to date for security reasons, but that’s hard to do if you’re going to introduce breaking changes to something as fundamental as the editor.
