i only downloaded wordpress, installed it into a web folder, set it up

then installed the recipes theme from the dashboard

ok you should go to this address and create the child folder I mentioned befor
    wp-content–>themes–>food-recipes

I downloaded the them manually and then posted it to the server

I was adding a new menu item for all the recipes on the site as a global category so I can get a better idea of how big the site is

I was wondering is there a tool to cleanup the database and remove old revisions of posts?

databases are expensive so I want to minimize the size as much as possible

you do not need to remove previous comments
they have used a bit space of your database
you just need to run my instructions to disable comment .if you remove your databse you will face troubleshots. It is easy for me to delete but I think it may be difficult for you .

I am reasonably happy with the way the site is now, nowhere for a spammer to post anything and the overall appearance is fair

i noticed that the facebook icon was red, so much for their blue theme….

I added a new menu, to show all of the recipes on the site and that seems to be working

some of the other social networking are not the 800lb gorilla that facebook has become

Right now Azure has a free 20MB MySQL database, so I am hoping to stuff a lot of recipes into it before it runs out of room

I am using cloud images as content delivery, lots of free hosts out there

i guess its not so easy to move the default for add media to some cloud provider?

If I get your mean right, you want to use cloud sharing space to store your images ok?
if you store one hundred of food images and each image occupy 100k byte
    It store just 10MB
I myself store my site images in my host not in another site because free sharing hosts is not reliable .some days our data may be lost or remove by theme and our webpage face with bad conditions

I have also noticed some images disappear, when that happens I select another host and drop the old image host

not sure how successful the cloud image hosts will be, but they have not folded yet

azure has some content delivery options with up to 10TB for images and video which are static in nature unlike articles etc which tend to be edited ad nauseum

i have already uploaded about 60 recipes and there are a lot more where those came from, i will post more on the weekend

I see you have solved your problem removing comments
remember if you change the file of theme directly the chanes will disappear if you update the theme, the right way is creating child theme which i explain befor!
which way has you used now? child-theme?

The theme seems to have faded into obscurity, it has not been updated for 2+ years. Worst case scenario is that I make a fork and make a new theme.

Now that I have things more or less figured out, but one issue is how to get a dump of the database if i want to use a different server

If you want to migrate to another host
you can use plugin duplicator to backup your web (all content with database)
