Support » Installing WordPress » Remote Database

  • I am trying connecting to an external mysql database and having problems. Basically the blog exists on one server and I am moving it to another except for the database which I am leaving on the original server and connecting to externally.

    So I copied the entire wordpress folder over to the new server and simply modified the config file which contains the database info to point to the original host where the database still is (originally it said localhost for hostname, now I changed it to the ip address) I also white listed the ip address of the new server with the old one still hosting the database.

    /** MySQL hostname */
    define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘’);

    Shouldnt this have worked?

  • Check your database credentials with your hosting provider.

    You may need to authorize a remote MySQL connection. I know this is the case with servers using cPanel. Look in your control panel and see if there’s an option for remote MySQL connections. If there is you may have to add the new server’s IP address to the old server so it can connect.
