Is there a backup solution for WP that works together with a cronjob, e.g. for a backup every few hours?

Check there for One Click Backup – it may (or may not) be what you are after.
Cron jobs are not universally allowed by hosts, so you may be better asking with some more detail.

A script run by cron can certainly interface with mysql. That has nothing to do with WP. But I am a bit hazy on the details 🙂

podz: My hosting includes cron jobs, no problem. I’ll have a look at the One Click Backup. Can I use it with the development version of WP 1.3 too?

You will have to ask LL – the author – or try it. I have no idea.
