registering posters into two categories?

I was wondering if there was a plug-in that allows me to have users registered in two separate categories. In this instance, male and female. The intent is to be able to color the bg behind each poster either blue or pink, based on category.

I haven’t come across one, but I thought I should check, since I’m fairly new to this. Thank you.
