But no matter what I seem to do, the email containing the refund shows it with positive numbers. The amount is correct, but it’s just not negative.
By this, are you referring to the “Refunded order” notification under WooCommerce > Settings > Emails?
If yes, can you check if you’re perhaps using a template override or a plugin that’s modifying your store’s default email templates? Using the default templates that come with WooCommerce should show the refund amounts correctly as negative:

Also, when you say, “The amount is correct, but it’s just not negative,” are the funds correctly being sent back to the customer? This will help us determine if this is more of a cosmetic issue having to do with email templates or a sign of a bigger problem.

Thanks for the tip! I did some testing and found the plugin that changes this: it’s a multicurrency plugin. I already submitted a ticket to them for the fix!
