    I put several unwanted URLs as 410 (content deleted) in the redirection section of the RankMath plugin. These URLs no longer appear in Google SERP but when I post the URL on the browser, I get a page cannot be found (404). These URLs continue to appear in the google search console under 404. Why is this so and how can I fix this issue?

    I also resubmitted my site and the sitemap in the search console but still this issue continues.

    Thank you for contacting Rank Math support.

    Please note that the 410 redirect only changes the status code to 410 to inform crawlers that the content has been permanently deleted, but the URLs will still load the default 404 page.

    Google also treats the 410 errors the same as the 404 errors and can report them as 404 errors in GSC. The 410 status code informs them that the URL no longer exists, but they can still show it as 404 in the indexing report: https://support.google.com/webmasters/thread/7471925/google-is-not-showing-410-headers-keeps-saying-urls-have-a-404-status?hl=en

    You can confirm that URLs are returning a 410 status using the following tool: https://httpstatus.io/

    In the tool https://httpstatus.io/, many URLs are still showing 404 even though they are not appearing in the Google SERP. I checked this by giving the command “site:” the url. This is confusing, Also, if the url is showing 410 in the tool but still appearing under 404 in the search console, how can I remove them from the search console. It looks ugly. Does Rank Math have any such functionality?

    Hello @mjaitly123,

    If you have set up the 410 redirect for the URLs, then they should 410 in the https://httpstatus.io/ tool. Please share some affected URLs and a screenshot of the redirection rule you have created for them. You can use a tool like https://imgur.com/ to share screenshots.

    Please note that once Google discovers the URL, you can’t remove it from the GSC account. Google will detect the 410 status code and will stop crawling those URLs. However, the URLs will be still be included in the Page Indexing reports as “Not Found (404)”.
