Redirection for www version

We have the redirection tool implemented on our site – example.com. But when we redirect URLs, it points them to the www version of those URLs – http://www.example.com. Which results in a redirect chain – original URL to http://www.example.com to example.com. Is there a setting that will allow us to point the URLs to example.com instead of http://www.example.com?
