• My suspicion is that a child theme based on twentytwelve will be my solution, but I wanted to run my preferences past the community and get your opinions.

I am fairly comfortable with creating child themes to re-style the appearance with CSS but I’m not that comfortable mucking around with the php files, though I can usually figure it out eventually. The point is, I’d rather not have to.

The site is very simple – nothing more than a blog with standard articles and pictures. I don’t need all the fancy wiz-bang sliders and such.

My main goal is I want the site to load quickly. I have been using some popular themes from the Extend section and they often load slow. I suspect that is due partly to the complexities involved being they are drag and drop, etc.

  • I think it’s a bit hard to make predictions about site load times – since there are many variables. But, yes, a theme that has lots of features can be slower. Why not put a bunch of content in your site in a twentytwelve child theme and see how it works for you. You could also switch to a few other themes as a comparison once you have some content in the site.

But photos, videos, photo size and hosting/server factors are all significant and outside of the theme per se, so those would be a consideration too.

Thank you WPyogi, would you say that the theme choice doesn’t weigh very heavily compared to other things like using W3 Total Cache, image optimization, etc?
