Rebuild database – bizarre events when changed password

    So a site built by someone unknown to me was going along fine until yesterday when I decided to change the password on the database. Suddenly, the site reverted to the generic “Just another WP Site” even though all of the content was there in the files. The database is miniscule, just has the original WP stuff. All of the backups are the same. And all of the backups kept by the host are the same. Somehow the site was operating quite well while it had an empty database but my modifying the password killed it. Anyone seen such a thing? Obviously I have to rebuild the database. Is the best way to use the existing database or to create a new database? Any better way to go about it other than cut and paste everything? Thanks!

    There has to have been a different database.

    Is the best way to use the existing database

    I thought that was very small, original.

    If your posts are still showing online then the database is there. That is where everything is stored.

    The host folks looked back for months and found only the now installed database, just the original hello world. I cannot see any of the content but it is all there in the files. All very confusing and bizarre.

    Could someone give me a pointer about the most efficient way of rebuilding the database? As it is, I’m just assuming I’ll start with the default theme and start cutting and pasting pages. Any pointers on how to determine which template was used for which page? Or even which theme was used for the site?

    There is no content in the files. All content, settings, etc. are stored in the database. No database=no blog.

    ok so how did you change the password on the database, and did you also change it in wp-config??

    It was working when I went in and changed the password. I forgot to change wp-config.php so i noticed Database Connection Error the next morning and so I changed the password in wp-config.php. At that point it came up with the default hello world.

    Can you explain this further?

    If you have only changed password and wp-config, then in theory you have all the data, we just need to get it linked again.

    Have you actually been into the database and seen if it has any of your content?

    I presume you haven’t changed the password back to see if that works?

    in WP-config did you just change the password? or any other parameters?

    The problem is …. it is inexplicable. I did only change the password in wp-config.
    The db and all of the backups have been inspected by host support personnel and confirmed there is no data there.

    I’ll try changing the password back just to see if something magical happens but I don’t see how it could.
