Query Loop Block – Inherit query from template

I am looking for details on what the toggle ‘inherit query from template’ is looking for. Specifically:
1. Where would this template be stored?
2. What kind of file is acceptable – php or html?
3. Does this work like single.php works for a post?
4. Does full site editing need to be enabled?… i.e. Gutenberg installed for this to work?
5. What is it’s intention? Is it a way to customize the query loop?…e.g. adding category modifying the format of date, or changing the link to the post to a more link.

Thank you, @t-p. That documentation that you have directed me to review is for template pages. I am referring to the QUERY LOOP BLOCK. It has a toggle ‘inherit query from template’. I cannot find any information on how that works ‘under the hood’.
