• I had multiple readers email me to say that they couldn’t submit some comments. Not that the comment vanished or was eaten as spam, but that simply wordpress wouldn’t let them submit it. A little exclamation point popped up in the top left corner and the text just wouldn’t be accepted.

Note this wasn’t all comments. I was still getting some, just others were ‘randomly’ not working.

First thing I did was disable all spam plugins. I know that worked because I’m now getting spam show up for me to moderate :(. Still didn’t fix the issue.

Next I checked the discussion settings. Nothing weird there. I haven’t added any blacklist words or tweaked anything.

Next I tried to repro it using the comments they emailed me. I got a consistent repro and saw the same thing. However, when I edit some of the words in the comment I could get it to submit fine. Specifically, if I removed ‘naughty’ words like ‘kinky’ or ‘dominatrix’ then it would go through. Too many ‘naughty’ words and it would block. Not be accepted, not go to spam, just do nothing.

I got the repro to the point where I could just change one word in a comment and get it to either submit or fail. Changing a ‘kinky’ to a random safe word would make the difference.

I’m running very few plug-ins, and absolutely none that should have this behavior. I can’t find anything in the documentation that describes this. Searching turns up lots of stuff on blocking spam comments, but nothing about comments failing to submit based on content.

    Any ideas? It’s really weird.

    There’s nothing “puritanical” about WordPress.

A little exclamation point popped up in the top left corner and the text just wouldn’t be accepted.

That’s not something that’s built into WordPress.

    *Looks*

You’re running WordPress 4.4 http://www.femdom-resource.com/readme.html but the comment form is showing up as the old layout. I think it’s either your theme or a plugin.

    Try this temporary troubleshooting steps.

Please try the following temporary steps to troubleshoot:

    • Switch to the Twenty Fifteen theme
    • Deactivate all of your plugins, no exceptions
    • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies
    • Re-visit your site and try and leave a comment without logging

Do you still get the problem when you do that?

If the problem goes away try putting it back except the theme. Then test again. It still works then it might be your theme (which is where I think your problem may be).

Thanks for the advice. I ran through the steps you suggested. That didn’t fix the issue but it did change the behavior slightly.

With the twenty fifteen theme selected and all plug-ins off (and using a clean browser) posting a ‘problematic’ comment would drop my to what looks like a 404 page with an “Oops! That page can’t be found.” The URL displayed at this point was – http://www.femdom-resource.com/wp-comments-post.php

Changing a few of the ‘naughty’ words in the comment to random gibberish would again let the same comment go through correctly and give the right feedback to the person submitting it (i.e. It was awaiting moderation).

I assume that this was actually the same thing that was happening before. Just that before the old comment form/theme was being less descriptive and just giving me the ‘!’ behavior. Now it complains more obviously but doesn’t help me much.

Any ideas on next steps? I’ve switched back to previous theme and turned plug-ins back on for the moment.
