Pure xhtml vs wordpress

I have a quick and urgent question.

I am building a portfolio website.
What I noticed is that a lot of professional website development studios out there are building their pages or pure html, xhtml and styling their blog and news pages with wordpress.

Why are they doing so ?
Is this a SEO trick, does it affect the search engines ?
