I’ve a problem with protected images. Logging in for the first time the images load all (most of the time). Refreshing the page or navigating various pages and coming back to visited pages some images seems to load – others not – and show the icon that there is no image. Sometimes all images do not load.

The problem persist in all browsers and on mobile.

    I’ve changed wp-config with:
    define( ‘UPLOADS’, ‘wp-content/plugins/s2member-files/’.’files’ );

Images are uploaded by default in the protected area.

Download options are set to ‘999999999’ per 1 day and I have tried ‘999999999’ per 365 days.

Any suggestion where to look? or ideas why the protected images are not consistently showing/loading all the time?

    Thanks

  • No, not sure, I’ve never used that setup.

But if you’re logged in, the images should be served. If you right-click the image and try to open it directly, does it load or are you sent to the Membership Options Page?

If redirected, what are the variables in the URL please? WP Admin -> s2Member -> Scripting -> Membership Options Page Variables

Also, in case it’s a login session problem, please see: http://www.s2member.com/kb/logged-in-but-am-considered-logged-out/

    Christian,

If all images load fine than this is the URL:
    http://portal.my-domain.com/wp-content/plugins/s2member-files/files/2014/04/file-name.jpg

Opening the image in a new tab:
    http://portal.my-domain.com/wp-login.php?s2member_file_download=files/2014/04/file-name.jpg

When the images does not show or show a missing image icon the URLs are the same, except when opening in a new tab http://portal.my-domain.com/wp-login.php?s2member_file_download=files/2014/04/file-name.jpg it show the 404 page error.

I haven’t touched or changed anything in the Scripting API.

Additional note: It is a portal and completely protected from the public. All pages/text inside the protected area work fine. The problem is solely the images somehow. And the problem seems to be happening when refreshing or re-visiting pages…

I see. I’m not sure I understood the URLs explanation, but what you said last sounds like a caching thing, maybe… I’ll ask Raam, who’s working on QuickCache and may have a better idea of what you’re describing.

It’d really help if I could actually see what you’re describing, to try notice what could be wrong.

    Thanks Christian,

The links seems to be okay (especially since they are working correctly when loading the page for the first time).

The best way to describe the problem is that when re-loading or re-visiting a page the places where there should be an image there is no image loaded or the broken-image-icon shows. Really odd thing.
When the broken-image-icon shows and then right-click -> open image in new tab -> the page is a 404-error page.

I will look into the ‘cache’ first and see what I find.

Okay, I look forward to your update. And thanks for explaining a bit more the problem.

You could ask your webhost about the 404s, too.

So.. a week later and still got the problem. Finally it looks like we got to where the bottleneck really is. I am currently in Bangkok, Thailand and my server is in North America.

The ISP that we are using seems the problem, altho they deny it. I am not that technical on this front, but by my understanding it is because of their DNS servers. I did a Traceroute diagnostic and you can really pinpoint delays.

My guess for now is that it is a location/connection issue and likely have to change the server to solve this problem…

Ah, I see. I’m glad you narrowed it down. I hope you can resolve it soon. Let us know how it goes. 🙂

Since it seems unrelated to s2Member, I’ll mark the thread as solved (as an s2Member issue), but I can change it back if you find it’s needed.

Okay, I will move to another server and let you know if the problem persists or will be solved.

    Cool.

Christian, I moved everything to another server and this problem is solved.

    Case closed. Thanks!

Great! Thanks for the update. I’m glad you sorted it out. 🙂
