http://wordpress.org/themes/grassland has not been updated for 4 years and may longer be supported by its developer. I strongly recommend that you consider switching to a more recent theme asap.
I tried several themes new ones they have not only the same problem, older blogs are not displayed in ie8 but also doesn’t it display the banner. The only thing i know is ie8 does not handle empty tags. For some reason they are only in the imported blogs.
any other suggestion?

Don’t use ie8…?
While that’s not really directly solving your problem it seems you’ve confirmed that ie8 is the culprit on several themes.
yeah, i do not use ie but the blog readers with windows xp and ie explorer will do/try.the problem is that ie is common used and the highest possible version on xp is ie8. So it seems good thing the blogs works on ie8 as well.
However the new blogs functions very good, so maybe i must live with it and place a lot of new blogs.
