I’ve been trying to set up pages so that they show a custom menu, depending on the main section the page belongs in.

    Section One
    –Subsection One
    –Subsection Two
    –Subsection Three

    Section Two
    –Subsection One
    –etc.

With the menus built, I’ve tried using WPMU’s Custom Sidebars Free plugin, as well as Display Widgets SEO Plus. The two plugins use completely different ways of configuring what you want to show, but in both cases when I activate it and point it at one of my custom menus, the menu is displayed twice.

(in the example, “In This Section” is the title I gave the widget, and “Getting Started” is the display name given to the link for “Things You Must Know First…”)

    Hi,

The theme automatically generates the menus in the sidebar, you don’t need a plugin for that.
If you install a plugin and set it up with widgets – then you will simply have 2 separate menus, one native from the menu and one from the plugin(s).

If you want to remove the menu that is automatically generated by the theme, go into Appearance > Customize > Theme Options > Other Options and uncheck the “Display Auto Menu in Sidebar”.

Thanks for pointing out the theme option. The odd thing was, nothing was appearing in the sidebar at all until I added my custom menu. When I put it in — two menus. When I deleted it — zero. But unchecking the box solved it, at least well enough for my use.
