• Running WP 3.1 on a couple of completely independent sites. The updates went smoothly, as far as I could tell, but on one of them when I logged back in a while later, it said there was an incomplete update, and wanted me to re-try. I did, but it said I was running the latest & greatest. Found a solution on the forums, deleting a .maintenance file. Now there are plugins to be updated. On one site, it just lets me select them and update — no prompting for ftp credentials, and all goes well. I *think* this was a new 3.0 feature (?). On the other site, it prompts for creds, but it claims a login failure. I can use the same server/username/password with no problem from a command line ftp, so I have every reason to believe the creds are good. So, 2 questions:

    1. Why is the one site still using FTP for updates?
    2. Why won’t that site accept perfectly good credentials?

    Thanks for any help!

  • 1. It’s server specific and may relate the hosting account configuration

    2. No idea. Try asking your hosts for assistance.

    Thanks, esmi.

    1. Can someone give me a little more detail about how WP knows or chooses to use the “newer” update method vs. the old ftp method?

    2. Seems to me it’s not the host — when I ftp directly, the same credentials work swimmingly.
