I’m using the Sample Child Theme on the Genesis Framework and am trying to configure MailChimp with the theme. I have managed to configure the email sign up form found on the blog page, however, I have also added an Email Newsletter block to my homepage (found in the FAQ section at the bottom of the page) which is not working and is giving me the following error:
“There was an error subscribing your email address. Please try again. Error: 400: Your merge fields were invalid.”

I have added a Mailing List in the drop-down in the Email Newsletter block settings, so it’s not that. I believe it’s because this email sub box does not include the ‘Your Name’ section while the box on the ‘blog’ page does. I have also read the Genesis Beginners Guide which said that widgets cannot be used on the home page, so perhaps this is the source of the problem and it’s not possible to add a configured email sub box there?

My question is, how do I make that email sub box the same as the one on the blog page? Alternatively, could you please advise why this error might be occurring?

    Thanks

    Hi @thenomadicgardener,

It sounds like there could be a conflict with the eNews Extended widget, but I’m not sure. Does it work if you temporarily deactivate that plugin?

    Hi @mindctrl,

I figured out the problem and thought I would post an update for anyone else trying to do the same thing. Essentially, the theme does not allow for random placement of the eNews Extended widget, there are specific areas within the theme that allow for a widget to be placed and you have to work within those areas. The only area that allowed placement on the homepage of my theme was in the footer, so that’s where I’ve placed the email sub box.

TLDR; don’t try to put a square peg into a round hole. The eNews Extended plugin can only be used in certain areas of the theme, via widget areas.

Glad you figured it out! Thanks for the update.
