These are the commercial vendors recommended by WordPress.org: http://wordpress.org/themes/commercial/
I’m actually searching for the same advice and came here to the forums for some help. The commercial themes index really doesn’t offer any advice beyond a list of vendors to dig through.
I’m curious if anyone has experience with themes, plugins and the folks at wpmudev.org? While it seems like a no brainer, I’m thinking there is more than one catch. I’ve seen some folks unhappy with their billing procedures, but beyond that – how’s their stuff? Are they respectable?
Sorting through themes at wordpress.org is like finding a book at the library without a catalog or call number. There’s no sorting by anything – it sort of dumbfounds me unless I’m missing some secret search and sort portal.
Moving on – are there any drawbacks in going with a themeforest theme from an author who appears to be active in providing updates and support?

I’m sorry but topics like these (just like “which web host is best?”) get closed down because they can get really spammy really quickly.
As Andrew pointed out please consider looking at this list.
Commercially Supported GPL Themes
That list is more as a list of GPL compatible and friendly providers and not an “endorsed” list.
They’re all good companies and I do encourage you to feel free and contact each of them.
