posts not causing email send

my blog is not sending emails out when I post. It does send other emails out like the welcome email so email is working in general.

I have the email log plugin installed and it logs the new user emails or the password resend emails. It logs nothing when I post.

I also have the WP-Mail-SMTP plugin installed as suggested in other posts, but still no luck.

Any ideas on how to start debugging this? I am a programmer but not that familiar with the structure of the wordpress code. Is there a way to log all function calls when I click the publish button on my post?
