Posting shortcode syntax without executing it

I need to post shortcodes, so users can read how they are used, but I don’t want them to run.

If I add [shortcode_example]your text[/shortcode_example] it will actually run the shortcode and not display the syntax.

I tried using the html tag and it doesn’t work. The shortcode is still generated.
