Posting by email

I went in to settings and set up the post by email settings. I THINK I am supposed to set up a new email address, so I did at my webhost cPanel I entered the mail server for my webhost, along with the port my webhost says, and the email address I created, and the password.
I found this article that says after doing all of the above, you have to go to http:\\www.mysite.com\wordpress\wp-mail.php. If this is a required stop, why doesn’t the Post via e-mail settings page say so??? Anyway, changing the url appropriately for my installation, I went to the page but got this error message:
POP3 connect: Error [220-box683.bluehost.com ESMTP Exim 4.84 #2 Thu, 14 May 2015 13:05:34 -0600 ]
I sent two test emails to the email address I created and the emails were received, so what am I doing wrong?
UPDATE:
I found the specific POP3 ports for incoming and outgoing mail for my server and tried both, but am still not able to post via email. For both port settings I’m getting this error now:
POP3 connect: Error []
Help!!
