You can style your poll via the polls-css.css

Quick question. If I set up a new background, will this setting be overwritten by the next wp-polls update?

Unfortunately yes, have no time to get that fix. Unless you are using pure CSS

Check the WP-Admin -> Polls -> Polls Options, third radio button that says use CSS Style

Can you please share what css you used to put a border around the poll, or what css you used to make the background a different color? Thanks!
