Poaching from posts
-
I posted about a problem I’m having with an older version that needs updating and someone trolled the post and contacted my client directly. I’m outraged and hope that WordPress will take this seriously. I would contact them directly, but I can’t seem to find a way to do so. So I’m posting here.
Beware of using this forum–there are unethical people looking to poach work out from under you.

We’ve already blocked this person’s accounts on the forums and deleted their posts, but unfortunately there’s not much we can do to stop things outside of the forums. I’m really sorry about this, it is upsetting.
Thank you Andrew for your prompt reply. I’m glad to hear they are blocked. Before I posted on this forum I read the rules and did my very best in my post to follow them. One thing I’ll never do again is post the domain name publicly. I would respectfully like to ask that WordPress consider removing that requirement from your do’s and don’ts.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
MelissaIt’s not required for you to post the domain name, but not posting the webpage with the issue can hinder your support.
Domain name/webpage/web address is all the same thing isn’t it? All they have to do is run a Whois and find out who to contact if they owner’s not applied a Whois guard to their domain name.
Regardless I still think that it should be removed from the content of the forum intro letter. Or at least a warning that poaching goes on.
Yes it’s a surprise to us too that this goes on, but it is a minority of people who abuse the WordPress.org forums. We’re not sure how many people are affected. The general rule is not to post information that you’re not comfortable with being public.
The issue with adding an informative message letting people know of this practice is that people don’t tend to read it. These are people who aren’t in the most calm frame of mind when they’re asking for support.
I will consider adding it to the forum welcome though, it would be useful to know at least somewhere.
Great idea! Thank you. Your comment about calm frame of mind made me smile 🙂 LOL
Question…
[I know this is not the forum to be posting in]
Are you a WordPress techie too? Because other than a poach, my post has only got one reply and it’s not really useful as I’ve already been to the WordPress page the reply user sent a link to. ANY help would be useful as my client is growing impatient. And now with this poach I’m eager to fix this ASAP.Sure but I’m officially at work so I can’t get stuck into any topics.
In a nutshell, I have two issues at the moment: one is my admin panels are blank and the other is the database is missing. FYI: I inherited this site and it is a heavily custom coded WP site … here goes.
I have not edited it recently and I went in to make some edits today, and the admin panel was not displaying content. It showed the left menu bar, however, it did not show the right ‘content’ area.
The only section that was showing content was the NextGen plugin. When that loaded I saw a notice about a WordPress update. (Which may or may not be directly contributing to my issue)
That said…
I did not want to update the site until I backed up the files and the database.
I went into the CPanel to access phpMyAdmin in order to backup the database, and found that the database for this website is not listed!I then went over to the “MySQL Database” section, and it also did not list the database that is associated with this website.
The Config file of the wordpress shows the following:
(note: It also shows the password, which I have omitted from this trouble ticket)define(‘DB_NAME’, ”);
/** MySQL database username */
define(‘DB_USER’, ”);/** MySQL hostname */
define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’);The front end of the website appears to be fine. So it is obviously pulling the data, however, I am very concerned that the database/database user is not listed, and that I am unable to run a backup.

James, thank you. I saw your replies.
I will reply there.
You’re welcome!
Just seeing this. That is not okay.
This message is to let you know that I have taken actions to block that specific company and any mention of them from these forums, permanently. They are now completely banned from this site.
We can’t stop them from reading the public forums, but we can stop any form of promotion of groups that exhibit this kind of behavior.
