Plugins for design showcase website

I’m looking at setting up a website similar to http://www.bigblackbag.com. My son recently graduated as an architect and he wants to manage an online portfolio. I’m looking at offering a site where designers (building, landscape and interior) can manage their own page and upload images, videos and text. Ideally they would be able to edit much of their page so that it reflects their style.
I think it would be best to store the images and videos on AmazonS3.
My initial thought is that it would be free for designers to upload a set number of images (for example 9 images). If they want to upload more images or videos they would pay a small monthly or annual amount. This will depend on what the storage costs are as I’m not out to make big money from this, just cover the storage costs for the whole site.
I’m not interested in offering domain names for designers, they would just have a page name on the site, eg. http://www.sitename.com/johndoe.
When signing up to the site I would like the designer to be able to select the design field they work in or are interested in, ie. Building, landscape, interior or a combination of the three.
I’d appreciate any feedback on what plugins would be suitable for me to set up the basic structure of this type of site.
