[Plugin: WP Super Cache] Total newb needs help starting

I’ve read through the FAQ and browsed these forums a bit. I’ve read around on Google and am requesting some assistance.

I have WP Super Cache plugin installed and configered. I ran a Google page speed test and it came back at 71… While I kind of expected this as a result fo the theme, I think I can still improve.

Google tells me I have 2 high priorities:
Enable compression
Leverage browser caching

I go back into wp super cache and it appears as though I have these settings turned on. Google speed test gives me specific resources to address. All of which are related to the installed theme. How do I compress and/or leverage browser caching for the specific resources Google has identified?

Also, I read that I should set cache to a one year interval. Is this value the same as the 3600 seconds that is defaulted in the plugin when first installed?
